5. Required Consultation Hours & Consultation Strcuture

EMDRIA requires 10 hours of consultation to complete EMDR Basic Training. Consultation is a required component of the training and is not optional.

Consultation included in tuition

Mindology Counseling’s EMDR Basic Training tuition includes the 10 required consultation hours. Prospective trainees are not required to pay separate consultation fees in order to complete the standard training sequence unless additional make-up, remediation, or individually requested support is needed outside the included training structure.

How consultation is provided

The required consultation hours are provided as part of the training program in five live 2-hour consultation sessions scheduled by Mindology Counseling over the course of the training. These consultation sessions are designed to occur in developmental increments so that trainees receive support as they begin applying EMDR therapy concepts and procedures in clinical practice.

Consultation format

Consultation is provided in a live group format and is intended to support clinical integration, case-based learning, and individualized feedback. Consultation is not limited to practicum discussion alone. It is designed to help trainees apply EMDR therapy appropriately and safely in actual clinical work.

Consultation timing

Consultation is provided outside the core didactic/practicum training days unless otherwise stated in the training schedule. Trainees are informed of the consultation calendar before or at the time of enrollment so they understand the required participation schedule in advance.

Consultation schedule

  • Consultation 1 — 2 hours

Focus: readiness, stabilization, case selection, and target sequencing

  • Consultation 2 — 2 hours

Focus: Phase 3 and 4 questions, incomplete processing, and common beginner errors

  • Consultation 3 — 2 hours

Focus: bridge into advanced methodology, RDI, and case formulation questions

  • Consultation 4 — 2 hours

Focus: future template, closure decisions, and advanced desensitization questions

  • Consultation 5 — 2 hours

Focus: integrating EMDR into practice, scope, fidelity, and next-step development

Purpose of consultation

Consultation is intended to support the safe, competent, and developmentally appropriate integration of EMDR therapy into clinical practice. Consultation may include:

  • case conceptualization support

  • treatment planning and sequencing guidance

  • readiness and stabilization discussion

  • fidelity to the standard protocol

  • application questions arising from training and early clinical use

  • individualized feedback on strengths, growth areas, and next steps

Clinical focus of consultation

Consultation is intended to support real clinical application of EMDR therapy. As trainees begin integrating EMDR into practice, consultation may include discussion of appropriate client selection, pacing, case formulation, target development, protocol fidelity, and questions that arise in early implementation.

Consultation faculty

Consultation is provided by Christy Huang, LCPC and/or qualified EMDR consultation faculty consistent with current EMDRIA standards, when applicable. Consultation is provided in a live group format unless otherwise specified.

Participation expectations

Trainees are expected to attend all required consultation sessions, participate professionally, and come prepared with questions related to clinical integration, case conceptualization, or implementation of EMDR therapy within their scope of practice.

Additional consultation outside the included structure

If a trainee misses required consultation, requires remediation, or requests additional support beyond the included 10 hours, additional fees or separate scheduling may apply.

6. Attendance, Participation, and Camera Requirements

Full attendance is required for all live portions of the training, including didactic sessions, practicum, and consultation.

Participants in virtual training are expected to:

• join from a private and appropriate learning environment

• maintain a stable internet connection

• keep their camera on during live sessions unless an approved accommodation has been made

• remain professionally engaged throughout the training day

EMDRIA requires that, during virtual basic trainings, trainees must have cameras on so training faculty can monitor attendance and visual participation.

Late arrival / missed content policy

If a participant misses more than 15 minutes of required live content, make-up requirements may apply.

Make-up requirements may include:

• attending missed content with a future cohort

• additional supervised practice

• completion of an approved remediation plan

• additional fees if make-up or re-enrollment is required

7. Practicum Expectations and Participant Safety

Practicum is an educational component of the training and does not constitute personal therapy.

During practicum, participants may take the role of:

• clinician

• clinical recipient

• observer, when applicable

Practicum may involve the use of real-life material to the extent appropriate for training and participant safety. EMDRIA notes that practicum may be done in dyads or triads and that trainees should receive direct behavioral observation and feedback.

Safety statement

EMDR-related exercises may evoke emotional, cognitive, or physiological reactions. Participants are expected to monitor their own readiness and self-care and to seek outside support if needed.

Participants with significant dissociation, seizure conditions, cardiac concerns, pregnancy-related considerations, ocular sensitivity, or other medical or psychiatric concerns that may affect participation should consult an appropriate treating professional before participating in intensive experiential components.

8. Reuqired Reading and Preparation

Participants are responsible for obtaining and completing required reading associated with the training.

EMDRIA’s required reading currently includes:

• Shapiro (2018), EMDR Therapy: Basic Principles, Protocols, and Procedures

• Go With That Magazine, Fall 2020, Volume 25, Issue 3

• Guidelines for Virtual EMDR Therapy

Participants are expected to review required reading and preparatory materials before and during the training. Required texts are not included in tuition unless specifically stated otherwise.

9. Cancellation, Refund, Transfer, and Withdrawal Policy

All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing.

• 30 days or more before the training start date: full refund minus a $150 administrative fee

• 14 to 29 days before the training start date: 50% refund of training tuition

• 13 days or fewer before the training start date: no refund

Trainer-initiated cancellation

If Mindology Counseling must cancel or reschedule the training due to low enrollment, illness, emergency, or circumstances outside its control, participants will be offered either:

• a full refund of tuition paid, or

• transfer to a future cohort at no additional tuition charge

Mindology Counseling is not responsible for travel, lodging, lost wages, or other incidental expenses.

Withdrawal after training has begun

Once training has started:

• no refund is issued for content already delivered

• transfer to a future cohort may be permitted once, at the trainer’s discretion and subject to availability

• additional re-enrollment or administrative fees may apply

Consultation-related fees

If consultation is billed separately by outside consultants, those fees are governed by the consultant’s own cancellation and refund policies and are not refundable through Mindology Counseling.

Extenuating circumstances

Requests for exception due to documented medical emergency, family crisis, or other humanitarian circumstance may be reviewed case by case. Approval is not guaranteed.

10. Feedback on Trainee Progress

Participants receive feedback throughout the training process, including through:

• direct behavioral observation during practicum

• consultation discussion and individualized case feedback

• instructor review of participation, protocol use, and clinical reasoning

• learner assessment completion and training evaluations

• remediation or recommendations when a trainee needs additional support

Trainees also receive feedback during the didactic portion of the training through instructor clarification, discussion, learner assessment completion, review of understanding, and guidance provided before and during practicum progression.

Feedback is intended to help trainees understand strengths, identify growth areas, and develop greater safety, clarity, and fidelity in the application of EMDR therapy.

11. Grievance and Complaint Process

Participants are encouraged to first attempt informal resolution when appropriate by raising concerns directly with the trainer or relevant faculty member.

If the issue is not resolved informally, a formal written grievance may be submitted and should include:

• participant name and contact information

• a clear description of the concern

• dates, relevant individuals, and any supporting documentation

Response timeline

• grievances are acknowledged within 7 business days

• a review is conducted by the trainer or designated reviewer
